Nagaland is one of the 25th biodiversity hotspot in theworld which is rich in Medicinal and Aromatic plants. A separate Eco Plants branch was set up in 1969 with the objective to tap the potential of medicinal and Aromatic plants, pilot demonstration farms and processing unit for citronella oil were set up across the state covering an area of 350 Acres of farmland and 10 Distillation unit was set up during the period 1972-1991, initially production was encouraging as much as 8000 litre of Oil was produced annually with an average income of more than 20 (twenty lakhs) @250/-Rs per litre in local market. And due to non-understanding of the market dynamic oil production was directly controlled by middleman, the department is however maintain its farm over the year but the production has now unstable due to Wear and Tear of the Distillation Unit.
