India has made tremendous progress in piglet’s production during the last three decades and the piglet’s population in the country during 2011-12 stood at 1300 million. Today India is the fifth largest producer of pig meat in the world with an annual production of 2.47 million MT. despite this achievement, the per capita availability of pig meat in India is only 2.96 kg which is way below the ICMR recommendation of 11 kg meat per capita per annum. The piggery unit of the project has a capacity for rearing 2000 piglets; the piglets produced in this unit will be supplied to nearby village of Kiphire district. The project is proposed for scientific rearing considering adaptation of hygienic norms with proper vaccination and feed including prescribed medicines as per standard A&H Department practices. The pigs will be reared for 8 months i.e. up to their maturity and then marked to the local market for sourcing. The first batch will come out in first half of December and the last batch will be out by January last or February first half. This will ensure catering the market’s peak demand in the festive season i.e. the month of December and January. In the month of March and April the sheds will be maintained for any wear and tear, deep cleaned and sterilized. The next batch will again start from the month of May. Each batch of piglets will be rear for two months and will be sent to market. Once the construction of the project is done, the concern department will be leased out the concern society/SHG for operation and maintenance by observing tendering formalities and MoU.
