Project Details
The discussion with the community during round going activity, the need for bamboo drip
irrigation system for both seasonal and parental crops was highlighted this timeless and
traditional technology uses locally available material while harnessing the forces of gravity. An
assortment of holed bamboo shoots zig-zag downhill, diverting the natural flow of streams and
springs across terraced cropland.
The advantages of using bamboo are two-fold: it prevents leakage, increasing crop yield with
less water, and makes use of natural, local, and inexpensive material. Materials used during
installation last around three years, while maintenance is limited to cleaning and reinforcement
after seasonal monsoons. Cost is also limited to labor, which can be carried out by farmers
themselves. This traditional water structure is indeed contextual to location. Such variables
include: replenishable supplies of bamboo, upland sources of water, and the presence of
traditional terrace agriculture. Two workers can construct a system covering one hectare of land
in 15 days. About four or five stages of irrigation zigzag from the water source to the last point
of application. Along the way, 18-20 liters of water will eventually disseminate at a rate of 20-80drops per minute. This will enables the target beneficiaries, to cultivate black cardamom, paddy, potatoes, ginger, turmeric, cabbage, beans onions, garlic, colocosia (yum), maize, cucumber, chilies and etc, inseasonal rotations. The project will also focus and impart trainings on how the beneficiaries learnthe packages and practices of cultivating all these different crops and also preservation of seedswhich is very important in an Organic cultivation.Among the many villages in the district where our organization has been operating and working,we have chosen 4 villages with 150 beneficiaries i.e to make the bamboo drip irrigation system in 150 farms i.e covering 150 hacters for the pilot project. In this project as the number of the Bamboo drip irrigation system is 150, a main water reservoir needs to be constructed where the water will be collected from the water source which later will be distributed to the respective villages and farms. Each farm will have a Water Tank of their own to preserve the water for use.
